Parenting Perfectionism: How Comparison Is Stealing Your Joy
July 2025 | Louise Edwards
Let’s be honest—have you ever scrolled through social media, seen another family’s smiling vacation photo, color-coded snack drawers, or humble-bragging holiday card and thought, ‘ Are we doing something wrong?‘ You’re definitely not alone.
Welcome to the perfectionism trap.
More and more families today are caught in a quiet, exhausting race to keep up—often without even realizing it. We push ourselves to do more, be more, and make sure our kids are “more” too—academically, socially, emotionally. The pressure creeps in through Instagram posts, report cards, sports schedules, and even the well-meaning parenting advice we try so hard to follow.
But here’s the truth: perfectionism doesn’t bring peace. It brings burnout. And it doesn’t just wear us down—it wears on our kids, too. They’re always watching. They hear how we talk to ourselves, how we handle mistakes, how tightly we grip the idea of “getting it right.” When we chase impossible standards, they start to think they should, too. That’s why we’re talking about how to stop parenting perfectionism.
So what happens—really—when everything has to be perfect… but it isn’t? What message do our kids absorb when they believe they have to be flawless—but deep down, they know they’re not? It’s a painful cycle, one that breeds disconnection. And who wants to be the first to say, I’m not waving, I’m actually drowning?
The link between perfectionism and the growing mental health crisis in kids is real—and serious. Research shows perfectionism has skyrocketed over the last 30 years, especially among young people. And it’s no small thing. Perfectionist thinking is strongly linked to anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and even suicide.
But here’s the hopeful part: we can change the script.
That’s why we’re inviting you to join us for an honest, totally not perfect workshop: “Letting Go of Perfect: Break Free from Perfectionism and Comparison”
Led by Peace at Home Parenting founder Ruth Freeman, LCSW, this session will explore how perfectionism and comparison are deeply intertwined—and what you can do to help your family step off the hamster wheel.
You’ll gain practical tools and simple shifts that can have a powerful impact:
- Learn to spot perfectionist patterns—in yourself and your child—and take steps to turn those harmful habits around
- Understand how social media and peer culture distort what’s “normal”
- Recognize how comparison fuels stress, not success
- Break the myth of “perfect parenting” and replace it with self-compassion
- Support your child’s self-worth—based on who they are, not just how they perform
What if the best gift we can give our kids isn’t achievement, but acceptance?
Join us and start rewriting the story—from pressure and performance to connection and calm. Because your family doesn’t need to be perfect. They just need you—present, loving, and real.
